One of the things we love most about the Internet is its never-ending promise of free. There's free news, free entertainment, and, of course, free communication. If it can help turn a buck in the real world, there's a good possibility it can be offered for free online—where service upgrades, advertising, and personal data collection help underwrite the cost of such altruism.
